But it makes sense in this instance because I was referencing something that happened in 1998, just a few years before 9/11.
Also, in the US 9/11 is a benchmark for the modern era. While we tried to attach significance to the new millennium, Y2K was a dud because it was merely a change in the calendar, but 9/11 came soon after and it was an event that more or less defined a change of policy and political life in the country.
